Warner Bros Loses Rights to Superman's OriginsPosted: August 14th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Warner Bros and DC Comics have lost a little more control over Superman. In an ongoing Federal court battle, Judge Stephen Larson ruled Wednesday that the family of the superhero's co-creator, Jerry Siegel, has "successfully recaptured" rights to additional works, including the first two weeks of the daily Superman newspaper comic-strips, as well as portions of early Action Comics and Superman comic-books.
This means the Siegels now control depictions of Superman's origins from the planet Krypton, his parents Jor-El and Lora, Superman as the infant Kal-El, the launching of the infant Superman into space by his parents as Krypton explodes and his landing on Earth in a fiery crash.
DC still owns other elements like Superman's ability to fly, the term kryptonite, the Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olsen characters, Superman's powers and expanded origins.
In a statement, Warner Bros. and DC said, "Warner and DC Comics are pleased that the court has affirmed that the vast majority of key elements associated with the Superman character that were developed after Action Comics No. 1 are not part of the copyrights that the plaintiffs have recaptured and therefore remain solely owned by DC Comics."

No more flashbacks of Krypton? Wow, good for the Siegels. Way to stick it to the man. I wish my great grandpa had done something and I was still getting paid for it(rolls eyes).

You know, I thought I cared, and then I saw what they did with the last Superman film, and realized I don't give a f*ck.
But for sure, it must be nice to f*ck over the audiences by tieing up some long dead guy's superhero just so you can not work and milk two companies for royalties until the end of time. Like the Siegels give a sh*t about Superman. Like they've EVER even read a comic book. But they'll cash the checks faster than a speeding locomotive.
Greedy bastards.

@mink - You sir are right on the money.
I guess Kryptonite isn't the only thing that can kill Superman.

Interesting. Maybe they'll realize we REALLY don't need another origin story. We all know who Superman is and most of us know where he came from. Get away from retelling Superman's story and try coming up with something action-packed and new! Ok, I'm going to stop before I really get annoyed.

He's boned her... she's spawned... we get it. Move ON ALREADY!!! Go save EARTH, move planets! Some sh*t other than saving cats from trees! HE'S SUPERMAN FOR GOD'S SAKE!!

So Warner can make a Clark Kent movie... while Siegel sells his winnings to FOX to make a Superman movie where Supes can't fly, doesn't have a weakness, and no supporting characters... tremendous

well good its about time they got the ball rolling on SUPES future, they have focused too much on his past. Lets see solom grundy, or doomsday now. Lex has been told so many f*cking times, is tiresome... Either make him bad ass or just put the character for a while...

Mikowski, shut the f*ck up. Creators deserve to own their creations, not corporations. DC bought the rights for Superman for less than $200 in perpetuity - FLAT. That's horse sh*t. His family deserves to own a piece of Superman, and DC can license it from them. (And before you say, "he signed it away," so did Stan the Man, but that didn't stop the courts from deciding he should get his cut of the Spider-man movies. While I'm at it, f*ck the repeal of fin-syn too. Why should six companies, run by a gaggle of unimaginative white *ssholes, be the only ones to capitalize on content?

PLEASE! IF YOU SEND THIS TO TEN OF YOUR FRIENDS, YOU'LL MEET THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE IN TEN DAYS.
This is the level that Superman has fallen to- the people making this film have crucified the Man of Steel to a courtroom over personal issues instead of realizing the mess they are making is going to outlast all of them; Supes was supposed to be an American icon that stood for truth and justice. Bullcrap. He's now apparently just stands for dollar signs in the movie makers eyes. THANK GOD for Christopher Nolan.

without the other elements the Siegels dont have much. they can shop around the origins of sups to another studio but how many times can you redo the origins of superman. it will be like never say never again....a different studio bond movie but it still sucked. or the movie will be a lamer version of Smallville cause you cant have the filler of somebody swimming in a lake and get poisoned by kryptonite

what is so hard for studios and directors to understand?....just watch the first 2 with christopher reeve, and try to be more original like them...don't spice up the story or the characters...that's just the fad of this decade...it really needs to be killed off

You want a decent Superman film idea? Take away Lex Luthor, Kryptonite and the lame ass son. Add in a character who would actually be interesting for Supes to fight (Doomsday, Darkseid or Mongul) and have Superman be Superman.
This guy can move planets and the studios have him fight Kumar and lift islands.
However, i do think if they set it on Earth to kep Lois Lane in the movie. It gives Supes a little bit of emotional weight and something on Earth worth fighting for.
