The only two ways I can see this working would be time travel or a flashback, and both of those options are pretty lame. If Connery wouldn't return for the 4th (after the respect the original trilogy earned) he won't return for the 5th (after all the hate the 4th one got). And I doubt the man needs the money.

Although, a part of me wishes he'd come back. Why? Because when Sean Connery dies there will be many articles and television reports about his life and work, naturally. And they will all mention that his last screen appearance was in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" which is, in my opinion, depressing. Say what you will about Indy 4, or the potential of Indy 5, but I think it'd be better suited for his legacy that his last screen appearance be in the franchise he's most recognized for (except for James Bond of course).

Plus, I liked "Crystal Skull." A lot. Despite what a lot of people said.
I still think Spielberg is an excellent filmmaker and I'd gladly welcome a fifth movie.

There will be absolutely no Nazis or Connery for the fifth film. And if they don't hurry, no Ford. Lucas is writing the script. You guys are going to be very, very disappointed.

I had a feeling you'd say exactly that. If the man doesn't do it, I won't care. I even said in my original post that the only two ways I can see it working are ways I'd rather they didn't use. I'm just saying that if they discovered a way to bring him back, I think it'd be nice, I like Connery, I wouldn't mind seeing him again. But if (when) he doesn't return, that's totally fine. I'd rather they came up with a good story without Connery, rather than a bad one with him.

And Crystal Skull was not the cinematic abortion everyone seems to think it is. When I hear people say "it was the worst movie ever!" it just blows my mind.
Yeah, it had its weaknesses, but they are not indefensible. Just because it used CGI doesn't make it a bad movie. The original trilogy used state-of-the-art technology too, if they had CGI like that in the 80's you better believe they would've used it.

But whatever, I'm getting off point here and there's nothing I can say that will convince anyone who hates the movie to like it (not that it matters), and I can be called an idiot or any other names for liking Indy 4 and I don't care. Okay Mink or Triggax can you please seriously answer this question. What made Indy 4 so horrible? Like to me this is a legitimate question because I watch the film and I go "Classic Indy" it's not the best of the series but I don't understand all this hatred.

It used the same formula you can argue Spielberg perfected with the original films and does a lot of the goofy unrealistic things the other films did but all of a sudden it's become a negative. Like the regrigerator thing, I watched it and I laughed my ass off because it's so Indiana Jones. It was something only Indy could get away with because that's very much apart of the charm of the film. This guy surviving these like incredibly whacky and at times unrealistic scenarios unscathed and with a smile on his face. I don't know I just never got the indy 4 hate. Nor do I get the Spielberg hate but George Lucas I understand.

@ TH3D4RKKN1GH7 - That's exactly why it sucked. Because they tried to use the same formula way too much. Then they had to go and add something to that formula by throwing U.F.Os in there. The CGI is not THAT big of a deal in Indiana Jones 4. But the problem is they used to too much of it.

Again, by running too much formula into the ground. It luckily made the first 3. Yes. But it did not work for the fourth and I can tell you exactly where they went wrong.

1. They 'quickly' rewrote it.
2. Too much CGI and should've stuck with filming realistically more.
3. U.F.Os in an Indiana Jones movie.
4. There was no real myth to tie into IJ4. All the other 3 had something realistic of a myth to tie in to IJ.
5.Shia Lablouf (That should be a good point right there)
6. They set it in the 80s when it should've been set in modern day. If Indy was young then, he'll be the same age Harrison Ford is this day.

what i think held the 4th one back was the like you said i quick rewrite. The middle was not really a adventure story like the others. and the ending even with a UFO (which i don't mind because these are based on serials and there was a lot of that stuff in those) they need to have one last action beat where thy escaped the temple as it feel apart. that would have left you with a little bit more excitement. because after the ant fight the movie is pretty low on the high adventure.

i for one liked the movie a lot... and think it is on par with Temple of doom....
