Danny Boyle and Fox Searchlight noticed that there is something wrong with having children (Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and Rubina Ali) star in an Oscar-winning movie, but live in the slums of India. As a result, they gave their parents money to make sure the kids have a good place to live and have a chance to go to school. The parents quickly wasted the money, so another solution had to be created.
Trying again, Boyle decided not to give anything directly to the parents, but instead created a fund that will pay for their apartment and other expenses. Part of the deal was that the parents had to make sure that the kids maintain a 70% attendance at school.
Then came news that one of the fathers tried to sell his Ali and we now learn that Ismail school attendance is at 37% and Ali's is at 27%. The parents blame their children's hectic promotional schedule, but Boyle is not buying it and has threatened to cut the parents and kids off completely unless things change.

Is this Danny Boyle this stupid (but he's hoping to come off looking generous). These kids already got paid for their appearance in the movie... done deal. And if he thinks paying for the parent apartment will keep the parents from then spending $'s they'd normally spend on rent wisely... grab a brain. Cut these little street urchins loose. Let them fend for themselves like they had to before they had this wonderful opportunity. That or sell them into child trafficking... I don't give a shit.

I praise Boyle for the thought, but he should realise that these kids and their parents know only the lives they were born into, and don't know how much better their lives could potentially be. If some Hollywood director gave you a bunch of money, would you really try to elevate your life to one you don't know, or just go out and party? Mind you, at least I could stop selling tricks to Ranger.
