Stephen King's "It" Gets Director, Will Become Two FilmsPosted: June 8th, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Back in 2009, Warner Bros acquired the rights to Stephen King's "It" novel in order to adapt it for the big screen. At the time, the plan was to have one film, but now comes word that the studio will split the project into two installments and has hired Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre) to write and direct.
The story follows a group of kids called the Losers Club that encounter a creature called It, which preys on children and whose favorite form is that of a sadistic clown called Pennywise. When the creature resurfaces, the kids are called upon to regroup again, this time as adults, even though they have no memory of the first battle.
The book was previously adapted in 1990 as an ABC miniseries that starred John Ritter and Tim Curry as Pennywise.

Book was better than the film, but Tim Curry was phenomenal.

The original is a major contributor to why I have a true fear of clowns. Damn you Curry!!!

There can be only 1 "It" and it can only be played by the wonderfully terrifying Tim Curry. No one else is fit for the job and he's still around so here's hoping.

Really looking forward to this one, even though I don't have high hopes for it. They'll probably turn it into a comedy or something.

The television movie was an insult to the f*cking book, which is, imo, one of King's better works, Beverly f*cking all the guys unnecessarily (sorry Ranger) aside.
But I foresee either dev hell or failure, because it's not likely they can churn this out into films and keep people interested, and the director, well, he's a f*cking nobody. This has Darabont's name all over it, and, after that man's successes, I really hate the idea of some no-talent stooge working over King's arguably best book.
But hey, that From A Buick 8 film really took off, didn't it?

Well the book was amazing, and Tim Curry was fabulously frightening, but overall the TV miniseries was just okay. The first half was incredible...the second half was just goofy and badly acted by the majority of the adult actors. Plus the second half featured WAAAYY too little of Pennywise/Curry, and also had shabby effects for that crappy giant spider at the end.
This is one King story that could stand a big screen remake with a bigger budget and strong cast. As for recasting Pennywise....it'll be a big challenge, I'm sure, but it can probably be done.

@mink - lol.
This clown makes me think this is where MacFarlane got his 'Violator' clown (in Spawm) character from.
Maybe Erin Moran will get cast as The Clown (she can play it figuratively and literally). And think of the make-up they'd save.

"This clown makes me think this is where MacFarlane got his 'Violator' clown (in Spawm) character from."
Almost. I've read that both It and The Violator were inspired by John Wayne Gacy, and from the fact that children are often irrationally and deathly afraid of creepy old drunks in white face paint. Yet they still love Santa Claus at the mall.
"This is one King story that could stand a big screen remake with a bigger budget and strong cast."
Long, long overdue, but, will they get it right, or horribly, horribly wrong?
Easy bet, that one.
"As for recasting Pennywise....it'll be a big challenge, I'm sure, but it can probably be done."
Tom Noonan. He does scary very easily. Last Action Hero and Manhunter come to mind.

No, this movie scared the living f*ck out of me when I was a kid and I will be damned if it gets f*cked with by the director of "JANE EYRE" whatever the hell that is.
