"The Lone Ranger" Budget is Out of Control, Here's WhyPosted: June 14th, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Disney has been very interested in developing "The Lone Ranger" with Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. But the studio wasn't willing to fund a $250 million budget, especially when Westerns have been performing poorly at the box office lately.
Verbinski eliminated a huge action sequence and brought the budget down to $215 million, which Disney eventually approved. The film started shooting at the end of February and is now weeks behind and is already over its revised budget.
THR says that Verbinski once again brought the budget back to $250 million, with several sources claiming that it's actually even higher than that. Many are not surprised by the increasing costs, since the director recently opted to build an entire train from scratch rather than use an existing one. Plus the weather has damaged some of the pricey sets.
Insiders claim that Verbinski will eventually deliver a great film, which will wrap in August and released on July 3rd, 2013. Unfortunately, "The Lone Ranger" will have to gross at least $800 million just to break even.

John Carter all over again. I mean, how the f*ck do you let a film about a guy on a horse and his f*cking injun pal exceed 250 million? Does Lone Ranger have f*cking robots or something?
Disney has some SERIOUS problems.

I've never understood budget issues like this before. I understand it's a Western/fantasy action/adventure, but $250 mil....really?
Also, if the budget is $250 million, why does it need to gross $800 million to "break even"? Wouldn't it need to gross $250 million to break even?

you've got to take into account the marketing budget for the film, which could easily be 150-250 million but as stated westerns dont do that well (johnny depp or not)so this film will probably lose money and turnout to be yet another reason that disney is f*cked! There goes that avengers money......oh well

With all the crappy decisions Disney's making they might gamble away all their money before getting to "Avengers 2". Stan Lee needs to go and regulate those retarded mofo's before all the marvel films end up in limbo.

Let's assume that the marketing budget will be $100 mil. Which is a f*cking lot.
Let's say studio gets 55% of box-office revenue (except for China with their 15-25%, who don't seem to give much f*ck about westerns anyway).
We get approx. $650 mil. this movie needs to break even. Maybe $700 mil. But $800 mil.?
Disney must've lost A LOT more than reported $200 mil. on John Carter.

Just stick to original Pixar films that aren't sequels, with the exception of "Incredibles 2".

"Also, if the budget is $250 million, why does it need to gross $800 million to "break even"? Wouldn't it need to gross $250 million to break even?"
Exhibitors (ie theaters) collect half of the box office and the other half goes to Disney. So 800 mill is actually 400 M. which would be the cost when prints and advertising is added in.

I guess whatever load of money Avengers made, Disney will have lost it with John Carter and this film combined.

Who f*cking knows how much they actually spend on these flicks. Studios will never tell the truth because the higher the expenses/losses seem the less taxes they pay at the end of the year.

If the budget is out of control, remove Gore Verbinski, trim down the budget and hire somebody who is competent enough to bring a great Lone Ranger movie.

Well, that's obviously the only use of dumb-ass superhero movies: to trick stupid fat Americans out of their measly cash - which is then to be used on GOOD movies, like the Verbinski ones. :)
