George Orwell's "1984" Remake Hires WriterPosted: June 16th, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Back in March, it was reported that Imagine Entertainment, a production company ran by director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer, was planning a remake of George Orwell's "1984." And now comes word that Noah Oppenheim has been hired to write the script.
Oppenheim doesn't have much of a resume, except that he was a producer on "Today" and "Hardball with Chris Matthews." He somehow transitioned into writing feature films and is now providing the script for the upcoming "WarGames" remake.
"1984" is set in a dystopian society in a perpetual state of war, which in turn leads to a state of paranoia. The story centers on a man named Winston Smith who works for a government branch named the Ministry of Truth, where he alters facts and histories but secretly harbors desires of rebellion, as well as desires of a forbidden love affair.

Terry Gilliam would be good director to shoot this, but he usually write his own script... mabye Fincher could do it

"I should somehow transition into writing feature films"
No way. Your IQ is 200 points too high for that job (see Prometheus).
"Oppenheim doesn't have much of a resume, except that he was a producer on "Today" and "Hardball with Chris Matthews." He somehow transitioned into writing feature films and is now providing the script for the upcoming "WarGames" remake."
Do I need to say more about the current state of cinema? A remake of Wargames from the guy who was a producer, not even THE producer, for that stupid show on that stupid channel MSNBC.
And now he's working on a remake of a film that does not need a remake, on a film for which no one asked for a remake.
Oh, and I can't wait to see how they cheaply commercialize Orwell's fascistic satire.

Whoever thought that general audiences would pay money to see a remake of 1984 needs to be fired. V for Vendetta is as close to a modern take on 1984 that audiences will pay to see as you are going to get.

Is there no longer any creative writing of any kind in la la land? Remake after remake and sequel after sequel e.g. fifth time at the bat for Mission Impossible???
