West Memphis Three Biopic "Devil's Knot" Started FilmingPosted: July 17th, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Principal photography has started on "Devil's Knot" a biopic about the West Memphis Three that stars Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon, Amy Ryan, Stephen Moyer and Bruce Greenwood.
The film is based on the 2002 best-selling book by investigative journalist Mara Leveritt about the savage murders of three young children that sparked a controversial trial of three teenagers accused of killing the kids as part of a satanic ritual. The trial made headlines again recently when the defendants were released in August of 2011, due to new evidence uncovered by the defense, after 18 years in prison.
The new movie is directed by Atom Egoyan and is currently shooting in Atlanta, Georgia.

If you haven't seen Paradise Lost and it's two sequels - doc*mentary about this case, i highly recommend.
I'm watching this, can't wait - big fan of Egoyan.

I like how it's shot in Georgia. I guess Arkansas and Tennessee don't offer tax breaks for film productions. Anyway, lived in Memphis when it happened, and I have nothing much to add, other than to say the redneck population of both aforementioned states don't leave me with much confidence as far as criminal investigations go. The botched the case from day one, blindly prosecuting the three teenagers on little more than small-town gossip-mongering.
I just hope Egoyan does a far better job with the facts than Fincher did The Zodiac.

The Paradise Lost docs were good. But I just view these three as dumb idiots who confessed to a crime, police corruption not being the only role in their conviction. To listen to their reasons as to why they confessed still
makes me say "What a bunch of dumbasses!"

^^Ugh, they were kids, Cress. You might confess too if you were being grilled by several several very angry, very intent detectives over the space of days.

Yeah, I know they were kids mink. Dumb teens, but angry cops in my face yelling wouldn't make me confess to murdering three kids when I'm innocent.

Everyone says that, Cress, but it's not true, and unless you've been in the situation, you can't say for sure how you'd react. Sometimes people are held for hours without food, water or sleep, and they just confess to get the ordeal over.

The three confessed to others several times. There was no evidence of coercion. Echols went around bragging to others he committed the crimes.
The one sided movies and websites about the WM3 case leave out the evidence showing why the West Memphis Three were found guilty by a unanimous jury. The 3 plead guilty last year instead of waiting for a trial.
Misskelley confessed three different times to the detectives, once to the police and once to his own lawyers. Misskelley confessed five times in all. He also told two other people about the crime before he was arrested.
Echols went around bragging he committed the crimes to at least three different people after the crimes were committed. Baldwin told another person he committed the crimes. The person he told passed a lie detector test about the truth of this. All of the West Memphis three had failed alibis. Echols was seen in muddy clothes near the crime scene.
Echols had a history of threats of violence, violence, psychiatric treatment and psychotic behavior. His reported actions included brutally killing a dog, starting fires at his school, threatening to kill his teachers and parents and stating he liked to drink blood. See court doc*ments exhibit 500 for evidence of all this.
Echols' stated under cross-examination that he was interested in the occult. Echols' journal contained morbid images and references to dead children.
