Is "Gremlins" Franchise Dead?

Posted: August 9th, 2012 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Is Gremlins Franchise Dead?Submit Comment
Back in 2007, producer Michael Finell revealed that there were plans for a new, low-budget, direct-to-DVD sequel to "Gremlins." He said that a remake was also being considered. Then in 2010, director Joe Dante confirmed that a remake was in the works and that it will be in 3D. But a month later, Steven Spielberg denied any talks of a new installment.

So what's really happening? We know that Warner Bros recently renewed the website domain Gremlins3.com, so it sounds like a third film may soon go into production. Not so, says producer Frank Marshall.

"We've had people call us about it but I think that it's like doing 'Goonies 2' or 'ET 2.' I think it’s another time, it's another era and they should just rest where they are," he explained, adding that a remake is also not realistic. "No, I don't think so. I think by now we have something in our contracts where it can't be remade without Steven [Spielberg's] permission."

While Marshall believes that the "Gremlins" franchise is dead, there is plenty of evidence that it's not. At the same time that Gremlins3.com was registered, the studio also registered domains for "Blade Runner 2" and "Police Academy 8." And both of those are now in the works. Regarding a remake, why is it impossible for Spielberg to give permission? He's doing "Jurassic Park 4" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2."

The franchise was dead after the original movie.

It's one of those films that can't be matched no matter how much money and technology they throw at it.

It's a great slice of 80's cinema

'We know that Warner Bros recently renewed the website domain Gremlins3.com, so it sounds like a third film may soon go into production.' --- why, because they renewed the domain for $12. a year? That's the indicator of commitment this article is going on?!
