According to Variety, Paramount Pictures' pact with GI Joe toymaker Hasbro recently expired, along with the plan to make a movie based on the franchise. However, the article states that Hasbro representatives at the William Morris Agency have renewed a deal between the studio and the manufacturer, so the film is actually still on.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has long eyed bringing GI Joe to the big screen, and even talked about casting Mark Wahlberg as Duke. Under this new pact, di Bonaventura will still produce, but whether Skip Wood's (Swordfish) screenplay will still be used is unclear. The script in question not only contains a villain named Cool Dude, but also turns this franchise into a cheesy buddy flick.
