Great reset of the saga
August 10th, 2011 [6:19:53]
 10/10

SeWerin: First of all let me tell you this - i as much as any classic movie guy, don't like prequels. They are unnecessary, movie abominations, with the only true purpose is ruining mythology of the movies, more so - ruining your imagination on some events and forcing the "canonical" ones (made by writer who thinks he gets it best).

Now Hollywood took some time, but it seems that it's finally starting to learn to make good prequels (first X:First class now this).

Now i know what you are about to say - "blasphemy, not respecting original" etc etc.... but thrust me guys - i love original Planet Of The Apes - it was and still is - lovable classic ahead of it's time. But the truth is that four sequels after that were pretty big mess. Some of them had nice ideas, but it ended up being incredibly silly with all telekinetic humans and time traveling things.

Now considering The Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes - i only watched first trailer, and that's it. It looked like a typical action movie that went for a cash in. OK, i can watch that. It wasn't needed, but hell - you can't do much worse than Burtons version - can you?

Imagine my surprise when i found out that The Rise is actually a movie with a smart script, that logically and realistically handles the plot, and for the most part it's a drama focused on monkey?!

I am serious. The movie was fantastic. The plot was good and believable, and the pace of the story is perfect, and above all that, movie has emotions. The story slowly takes time to build it self - it doesn't rush, there is no action. For the most part it's drama.

And all actors are doing fine job. There is no one here mindblowing or with Oscar like performance, but they all did solid job. Well there is no one here with Oscar like performances among humans.....but monkeys, now that's a totally different story.

As you may or may have not here, the star of this movie is CGI monkey called Caesar, highly intelligent monkey, voiced and performed by brilliant Andy Serkis in mocap suit.

Now i can safely say that Caesar/Serkis should be first CGI character nominated for Oscar -he is really that good. When this monkey can create most emotions than your average human....well you are doing something right. His movement, mimic, gesticulations - all were brilliant and perfect. It really is sight to be seen.

Now considering other effects - they are fantastic. Every single monkey is computer generated and most of the time you wouldn't have known that! Every single hair, piece of skin, scars, birthmarks, tears - everything is so perfectly recreated, and pack that up with some realistic movments and you got yourself a real deal.

Now, music and directing were also great. The director Rupert Wyatt really knows how to handle both action and drama. There are a lot of beautiful stylized long shots that are very memorable. He is the guy who is focused in both story and characters - and it clearly shows.

Once the action starts - it's beautiful, it's badass, and above all - it's incredibly satisfying. You are invested!

No matter what they've told you this is not action movie. It's more drama with elements of mystery and action, but more importantly - it's a story about Caesar - about monkey who changed the game.

Oh yeah, it respect original movie - there are some really nice references and homages that fans will appreciate.

I am giving it 10/10. It's not realistic score (that would be 8-9), but i am still under impression. I didn't expect it to be this good. Hell, i didn't expect it to be good at all!

Need to see it again ASAP.

best movie of summer 2011
August 14th, 2011 [8:46:55]
 8/10

Rambo: In a weak summer of blockbusters in which we've seen horrible movies like 'Transformers:Dark of the moon' and just average efforts like 'X Men first class' and 'Captain America' shines this wonderful and surprising prequel to the 1968 classic 'planet of the apes'.
True,The movie has it flaws, starting from the questionable casting of James Franco as the main lead and continuing with an unsatisfying ending. But despite these minor flaws we get a movie with a smart and thrilling script, amazing special effects used in a creative way and finally - Ceaser - the main star of the movie which outshines all human efforts in other summer movies this year by bringing an intense and powerful character to life.

An all around great effort,'Rise of the planet of the apes' is the best movie of summer 2011.
